In 1992, AWWA approved the use of HDPE for force mains and distribution lines under C - 906 (4" - 63"). It had already been approved for use as service tubing under C - 901 (1/2" - 3"). With the advent of C - 906, the HDPE manufacturers eyed the $4 billion a year municipal pipe market with great anticipation.

Since that time, many of the manufacturers and others in the HDPE community have devoted a great deal of time and money developing all the necessary fittings, so that a complete HDPE system can be offered and adapted to existing water systems, just as it was for the gas companies in the 50’s and 60’s.

We are now seeing water companies all over the country, such as Indianapolis Water Company, installing HDPE as a product of choice, not necessity, because of the features and benefits of HDPE.
