Golf Course Piping : Aging Characteristics
Toughness and Aging of HDPE Pipe

All thermoplastic Pipes are basically non-aging. These plastic pipes don’t rust, rot pit or corrode. When underground, the temperature is stable and there are very methods of failure. On golf curses, HDPE pipe handle shocks from inside and outside! This includes earthquates!

West Coast Golf Course

In 1988, a west coast golf course selected HDPE pipe for the piping materials for the irrigation system. Of course, many of us are aware that in 1989, there was a major earthquate in California. This golf course, did not suffer damage in it irrigation system.

The system must resist not only breaks and leaks but also the forces that can cause them. Earthquakes are relatively rare, but not so with water hammer. The shock wave created by shutting off valves ins a main cause of leaking irrigation systems. IN addition, the more controls an irrigation system has, the more turning on and off of its automatic valves- and thus the more water hammer.

See our section on water hammer and read the attached case history from Golf Course Management Publication in 1989.

Golf Courses on Landfills

After landfills have served their purpose and have been capped, new uses are found for the land. Parks and recreational areas are being built over the old landfill.

There are problems associated with capped landfills. As the garbage decomposes, the soil settles. There is movement of the soil. ISCO has worked with many golf courses with irrigation systems on unstable soil.

The Flexibility of the HDPE pipe makes it an excellent choice for these unstable soil conditions. Contact Jim Kirchdorfer for more information.

UV Light and HDPE Pipe

Studies show HDPE pipe that contains two per cent carbon black has excellent weathering properties. Unlike other thermoplastics, HDPE does not become brittle in sunlight. In mines HDPE pipe has been used above ground for over 20 years.

Since most irrigation projects use buried pipe, exposure to sunlight is usually not a major concern. If pipe is need above ground on a bridge, HDPE is a good choice.
