ISCO HDPE pipe is used for a wide range of application. A great application for ISCO HDPE pipe is for golf course
irrigation application. Many irrigation pipelines are installed in areas that have a wide range of soil and loading
conditions.
Earth loading applies forces on buried pipes. These external forces when directed to flexible pipe are more complex
than internal forces. Dealing with rigid pipes is different than dealing with flexible pipes. A rigid piping system
like clay or concrete) must consider the total structure and are designed to handle all external loads and internal
loads. Flexible pipe is considered to be one component of a “soil-pipe” system.
In a buried pipe system, the wall thickness (DR) of the ISCO HDPE pipe and strength of the soil envelope must be
established in order to keep the wall crushing, wall buckling and ring deflection within acceptable values. For
flexible piping systems, the soil and pipe becomes one unit. The mutual interaction of the pipe and the soil each add
strength the system. This integrated structure handles changing force very successfully.
Burial of ISCO HDPE pipe is very simple for most irrigation piping systems. Since DR 17 and DR 11 thicknesses of ISCO
HDPE pipe, special bedding and trench preparation is not required in most cases.
Bedding is often not required when the native soil does not contain large rocks or roots. A trenching machine is often
used to create the trench and the ISCO HDPE pipe is simply placed in the trench and filled with the native soil.
When the irrigation pipe line passes under roadways, crushed stone or sand is used for bedding and backfill because of
the loading from cars and trucks. Typically, the pipe line will be a minimum of 30” below the roadway.
When ISCO HDPE pipe is installed on solid rock, about 4” of bedding material, crushed stone or sand are used under the
pipe. This prevents damage to the ISCO HDPE pipe over a long period of time.
Shallow burial of ISCO pipe is possible when only walking traffic, golf cards or lawn mowers will be the only loading on
the pipe. ISCO HDPE pipe does not break if frozen. When the irrigation system is used year around, minimum burial is
determined by the frost line.
When ISCO HDPE pipe is installed in marsh areas or in areas with
poor soil conditions, pipe joints require no special restraints. No
thrust blocks are required. Butt fused joints are self restraining. |

Trench Construction
Underground HDPE piping systems should be installed using suitable trenching and backfill procedures. Determine
the soil types to be trenched. When existing soils are suitable no bedding or foundation maybe required. Caution!
Soils vary widely. A professional engineer should be consulted before making assumptions about foundation, bedding
and backfill.
The soil-pipe interaction provides excellent strength and support for underground HDPE piping systems. The reference
standard for direct burial of HDPE pipe is ASTM D 2321 for gravity flow applications. Direct burial of pressurized plastic
pipe is covered by ASTM D 2774. Note: Snap-Tite pipe is for gravity flow applications
The drawing below shows a typical trench detail for direct burial.
