Expansion and Contraction of Buried HDPE Pipe
When HDPE pipe is buried as for a golf course irrigation system, problems with expansion and contraction
rarely occur. The weight of the soil on the pipe creates resistance to movement. In most cases, soil resistance,
limits movement and prevents problems.
For soil to resistance movement, it must be properly compacted. Compacted soil creates resistance around the pipe.
This limits movement.
Installation
When installing HDPE pipe underground, black HDPE pipe above ground will become hotter than the ambient temperature.
The pipe when places in the trench will begin to cool. Always leave adequate pipe above ground to be used for the next day.
If a connection with critical measurements is not connected at the end of day, plan to leave the flange or MJ connection off
until the next day. Often the highest temperatures of the day occur in late afternoon. Measurements made at the highest
temperature will be short the next morning in the cool of the day.
